Bank Reconciliation freezes

by Ellen
(Elk City, ID, USA)

I have looked for help on QuickBooks community but can't seem to find an answer.

I am using QuickBooks Pro 2008 and had no problem until this week with bank reconciliation. When I click on Reconcile now I get an error and it terminates QuickBooks.

I don't know how to fix the problem. Can you help me?

Thanks!

Jennifer replies:

It sounds like you might have a small data problem. Try running the Verify Data utility. If it prompts you, then run the Rebuild. Do not run the Rebuild unless the Verify instructs you to do so.

If you run QB across a network, please refer to the internal QB help before proceeding. Do not run the Verify or Rebuild until you do so.

If the Verify Data detects no problems, or if the Rebuild Data does not solve the problem, then I suggest you contact somebody who specializes in fixing QB data files. Here's the company I work with:

Tell them about your problem and request a free quote.

Adobe Reader 9 could be the problem
by: Paul Broni

I read elsewhere that Adobe Reader 9 is the culprit. I didn't think it was a data file because this happened with all of my various company files, not just one.

Indeed, deleting Adobe Reader 9 from my machine made the reconciliation process as fast as it used to be.

Mine freezes too.
by: LD

I have been using QB on my Vista with no problem.
And yes, just lately the bank rec freezes. What's up???

[Jennifer replies:]

There are so many possibilities. Try running the Verify Data utility. You may have a data glitch and this utility will tell you if you do. Then, if you do, run the Rebuild Data utility.

Thanks for writing.

Require Accounts Preference
by: Ellen

You will never believe the reason I was getting kicked out of the reconciliation. There was a bank charge entered on the first page of the reconciliation and I didn't assign an account. That's it! That's what was causing my problem. Hope this helps someone else!

Jennifer replies:

Thanks for letting us know. I'm surprised that QuickBooks didn't force you to assign an account when you entered the charge. It makes me wonder about your Preferences. There's a Preference called, "Require accounts," and if it's turned off QuickBooks does not require you to assign an account in any screen. Don't ask me WHY this is even a Preference! It should not be, in my opinion - accounts should always be required because without them, there's really no point to using QuickBooks.

If you are unsure of your Preference, follow this path to check it:

Edit > Preferences > Accounting > Company Preferences

One of the checkboxes in this screen is called, "Require accounts." Make sure the box is checked.

Thanks again for posting back.

Data Utility
by: Ellen

I ran the verify data utility and there was nothering wrong with the data. I don't know if it's a problem with QuickBooks and Vista?? I'll keep searching for an answer.
